Football Early Signing Period Recap

The NCAA Football Early Signing Period runs from December 4 - December 6, 2024. The Georgia Southern Eagles football program signed twenty players from the Class of 2025 on day one. As Coach Clay Helton promised, the majority of the signing class comes from the state of Georgia which is one of the best states in the country for high school football. Of the twenty players that signed on December 4, 2024, eight were offensive players, ten were defensive players, and two were special teams players. There was an obvious effort to get bigger in the trenches shown by the number of offensive and defensive lines signees. The lack of push up front on both sides of the ball hurt the Eagles at times this season. The coaches and recruiting staff did a phenomenal job of canvassing the state and region to pull in some top tier talent.

The biggest surprise of the day came from DB Akeondre Chaney who de-committed from Georgia State in November before narrowing his choices down to three: Georgia Southern, Georgia State, and South Florida. Ultimately, Chaney chose the Eagles and will suit up for Georgia Southern in 2025. He has the ability to make an immediate impact for the Eagles on special teams and in the defensive backfield.

The Early Signing Period runs through Friday, December 6, 2024, so high school recruits can still sign with the Eagles until then. After that, the Transfer Portal officially opens on December 9, 2024. The Georgia Southern coaching staff has used the transfer portal heavily the past two years and will likely do the same this year to fill some skill position gaps.

Eagle Nation, your Georgia Southern Eagles finished the 2024 regular season at 8-4 (6-2 SBC) and after seeing the start of this signing class, the future looks very bright in Statesboro, Georgia.
