Georgia Southern Volleyball Splits Series With App State To Move To 15-2
Georgia Southern Volleyball split two matches with Appalachian State over the weekend to move to 15-2 on the season. The only two blemishes on the season coming against Auburn early on and Appalachian State in the first match of the series. In the first match, the Eagles went up 1-0 after the first set (25-16) and it looked like it was going to be more of what we are used to seeing, but Appalachian State fought back to win the second set 25-23 and tie it up 1-1. Georgia Southern went on to win the third set 25-20 before losing the fourth set 25-15 and the tiebreaker set 15-11. It was a gritty performance by the Mountaineers of Appalachian State. In the first match, the Eagles were led in Kills by Reagan Barth (20) and Paige Powers (15). Those two also added three and two aces respectively. Maggie Sale led the way with five blocks and Kirsten Barrett finished the match with 45 assists. Ashlyn Lovett finished the game with 21 assists - the most for a player on either team.
In the second match of the weekend, the Eagles had to quickly forget the first one and get back to their game. Appalachian State jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead after a 25-23 win in the first set. However, the Eagles dominated the rest of the match and won three straight sets (25-23, 25-21, 25-18) to close out the match in four sets. It was a huge bounce back win for the Eagles and pushed them to 15-2 on the season and 5-1 in Sun Belt Conference play. Jillian Gray and Raegan Barth led the Eagles in kills with 14 each and Barth added three aces. Lydia Seymour led the Eagles with five blocks. Kirsten Barrett finished the game with 38 assists and Ashlyn Lovett led the team with 15 digs.
The Eagles are currently in first place in the Sun Belt Conference with 8 matches left before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Foley, Alabama. The Eagles look to continue their dominant season on Friday, October 25th and Saturday, October 26th as they take on James Madison in Statesboro, Georgia.
