2024-2025 Basketball Update

Men’s Basketball

The Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball team heads into the last ten games of the season with an 11-10 (4-5 SBC) record. The squad, led by Head Coach Charlie Henry, is much improved compared to last season when the Eagles ended up finishing the season with a 9-24 (8-10 SBC) record. Lately, G Adante’ Holiman has been the best player on the floor for the Eagles. In 13 games this season, the junior is averaging 16.7 PPG, 2.1 RPG, 1.7 APG, and 1.1 SPG in just 27.5 minutes per game. The transfer guard by way of Texas-Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) and Texas-San Antonio (UTSA) started the season coming off of the bench in his first six games played, but has started and led the way for the Eagles offensively in his last seven games. He did not suit up for eight games between November 30, 2025 and January 4, 2025, but since returning to the lineup against Georgia State on January 8, 2025 he has been nothing but stellar for the Eagles. Eatonton, GA native, G Eren Banks, has been another bright spot for the Eagles squad offensively in recent games as he is shooting 46.7% from 3PT in his last four games.

Georgia Southern has ten games remaining on their schedule with all but one being Sun Belt Conference games. The one non-conference game remaining for the Eagles will be a trip to Kalamazoo to take on the Western Michigan Broncos as part of the SBC/MAC Challenge. The season started with a win as part of the SBC/MAC Challenge as the Eagles beat the Northern Illinois Huskies 80-65 to start the 2024-2025 campaign.

The next game for the Eagles is on January 30, 2025, when they travel to Troy, Alabama to take on the Troy University Trojans before heading to Hattiesburg, Mississippi to face the University of Southern Mississippi Eagles on February 1, 2025. The Georgia Southern Men’s Basketball team is currently tied for 9th in the Sun Belt Conference standings, but there are ten teams in the conference conference separated by just two games. The next ten games are crucial for the Eagles as every position in the standings plays a pivotal role in the tournament after the Sun Belt reformatted the conference tournament.

Women’s Basketball

With a new face at the helm of the Georgia Southern Women’s Basketball team and a complete roster makeover, many fans wondered what would come of the 2024-2025 season. Twenty one games into the season, Head Coach Hana Haden has led the Eagles to a 9-12 (2-7 SBC) record after starting the season 4-0 with wins over Ohio, North Florida, Bethune-Cookman and George Washington. There are ten games left in the 2024-2025 season before the Sun Belt Conference Tournament which is scheduled for March 4, 2025 - March 10, 2025 in Pensacola, FL.

Offensively, the Eagles are led by G Nicole Gwynn and F Indya Green who average 12.5 PPG and 11.9 PPG respectively. In addition to the scoring from Gwynn and Green, there are three players who average more than 8.0 PPG: G McKenna Eddings, G Shanti Simmons, and G Nakiyah Mays-Price who average 8.6 PPG, 8.1 PPG, and 8.0 PPG respectively. On the glass, F Indya Green leads the team with 7.5 RPG and is followed by C Leah Johnson who averages 6.8 RPG. As a whole, the Eagles have struggled offensively as they are shooting just 40% from the field and 29.4% from beyond the arc. Despite the offensive woes, they remain in tight games by making huge effort plays, forcing turnovers, and outworking opponents. Four of their Sun Belt Conference losses have come by six points or less. This team is much better than their record indicates and playing in the close games could benefit them come Sun Belt Tournament time if they go on a run.

As of now, the Eagles are in 12th in the Sun Belt Conference standings with nine conference games remaining. All teams in the conference make the tournament, but the top ten teams get a bye, the top eight teams get a double bye, the top six teams get a triple bye, #3 and #4 automatically qualify for the quarterfinals, and the top two seeds automatically qualify for the semi-finals. To win the tournament as 11-14 seed, a team would need to win seven games in seven days, so winning some conference games over the next couple of weeks is of paramount importance. Georgia Southern’s next game is on January 29, 2025 as they host JMU at the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center. Be sure to get your tickets now and pack the gym for these ladies!
